DR Congo Katana

The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has a long history of wild growth of Robusta. So much so that 100 years ago Robusta was often referred to as “Congo coffee”, regardless of where it was grown. In 1895 a well known botanist named Professor Lament deemed the land so suitable for coffee growth that it could become a “second Brazil”. This kickstarted the farming of Arabica, and only ten years later half a million coffee plants were under cultivation for export.

The highland area of DRC has gained attention from specialty coffee roasters in recent years. With development commitments from specialty roasters and coffee traders, DRC is now on the specialty coffee map. In the last five years washing stations have been built in every growing region.
